The beginning of our Happy ending

If you read my how’d we get here blog post you have heard the story of how Kurtis and I met. If you have not I’ll catch you up now but you should definitely read it for the back story.

It was August 2015 when I met Kurtis. When we started talking I wasn’t necessarily looking for relationship but I was looking more for friendships. Kurtis and I met on a social media type platform. It was a app I had on my phone to connect and meet people in my area. I had downloaded this app about a month prior to meeting him. Mycoworker had told me about it so I thought I’d give it a try. I had received some pretty creepy messages and I actually deleted the app prior to talking with Kurtis. That same coworker said I needed to give it a chance so I reinstalled it and that very same night I received my first message from Kurtis. When he messaged me I thought for sure I knew him from somewhere. You know that feeling you get where you just know someone but you just can’t place it. We spent that first conversation trying to figure where it might be from. We talked a lot that next week and he wanted to meet me in person. Eakkk!

We met that Saturday morning it was August 15th and we walked and we talked. We completed the 3 mile loop around spring lake and I don’t think either one of us were ready to leave. We decided to head over to Starbucks for a cup of coffee. We are both coffee lovers. More bonus points for Kurtis. We talked even longer.

I had worked most of the day and we text message each other all day. We decided to meet again. This time for dinner. Again neither of us were ready for the day to end. We opted for part 4 of our adventure and took a drive.

We ended up at Healdsburg bridge. We sat and talked looked up at the stars and that’s when he kissed me. It was magical. I felt like my heart stopped for a moment. I knew at that moment I wanted to spend a lot of time with this guy. We ended the night with frozen yogurt and he drove me home. Even being on call it was one of the best days of my life. We have spent every day since that day either talking or together.

August 15th became the date we called our anniversary. We decided to celebrate our one year on August 13th because it was a Saturday and we both would be working Monday the 15th.

Kurtis made us dinner reservations at a restaurant that I had been wanting to go to for a while. We had dinner at Willis Wine bar. It was a lovely restaurant with a very cozy environment. We enjoyed dinner and talked about our 1st year together. The adventures we had been on. Talked about the things we loved about each other. We shared our excitement for the coming years together. It was amazing.

We had purchased gifts for each other that we didn’t open before dinner so we headed home to exchange gifts. We opened the cards first and I was already in tears. The words were so thoughtful and full of so much love. I got Kurtis a watch, he didn’t wear a watch but I thought it would be nice for him to have a nice dress watch. My gifts from him were very thoughtful although he called them “stupid” he got me some heart earrings with small diamond stones. A lamp for my vanity table. Plus some red vines (my favorite) I thought the gift was perfect. I had been looking at lamps for my vanity for months and the earings were beautiful. Kurtis also got me some of my favorite flowers.

After we exchanged gifts Kurtis asked if I was getting tired yet. It was getting pretty late and I’m usually sleepy early. I wasn’t tried so he told me to grab a sweater and we headed out. He didn’t say where we were going I was just along for the ride.

He headed north and ended up at the Healdsburg Bridge. The same spot where we went the night of our first kiss. We sat on the bench near the water and talked. Just like that first night. It was not as warm and there was a slight breeze. It was still a gorgeous night. We sat there for a while just looking out at the water remembering the first night we were there. I was starting to get cold to I asked Kurtis if we could go. We stood up to leave and he hugged me. This was not uncommon for him so I didn’t think anything of it. Thinking back on the events of the night I remember his heart was beating so fast but I didn’t think twice about it at the time. He hugged me for a while and then said before we go he had one thing to say.

Kurtis got down on one knee right there in the dirt on the side of Healdsburg Bridge in his dress clothes and pulled out a little box. He told me he loved me very much. He started crying and so did I. I wish I could clearly remember everything that was said word for word but he told me he wanted to spend the rest of his life with me. He asked if I would be his wife. He pulled the ring out of the box and placed it on my finger. I was in shock. I just stared at my hand. Kurtis asked if I liked the ring but honestly I couldn’t see it. It was so dark out there. I told him that and we both laughed. After we hugged and kissed again we went to the car so I could look at my ring.

The ring was perfect! It is so beautiful!! I was still in shock I couldn’t stop looking at my hand. He did one heck of a job picking out the perfect ring for me all by himself.

It was so late at that point and I wanted to share my excitement with everyone. I knew I wanted to tell my kids first. It was too late to call them. I couldn’t sleep that night I was so excited. I woke up so early the next morning ready to share our excitement with the world.

We now set the date for the wedding and August 20,2017 will be the day we say I DO
